Happy May 24th

It’s the 24th of May and we likes to get away

Up in the woods or going out the bay

There’s all kinds of places but the place we likes to get

Is up on the highway in the gravel pits

Happy May 24th weekend or May 2-4 as some call it around these parts. This is the first long weekend and the beginning of the camping season. This year the weather is great… bright, sunny and warm. That’s a change from last year for sure. It’s common for snow to fall on this weekend. Nothing is as bad as waking up from sleeping in a tent with snow on the ground. I remember being cold and wet but having a great time. I was younger then. Would I do that now…ah no. I am getting soft. I need a bed.

In Newfoundland some do what we call “gravel pit camping”. It’s campers who don’t visit the parks but prefer the sides of roads, along the highways in gravel pits. These pits are left over from road construction. There isn’t grass or trees just a lot of rock and flat ground. We even have our own song about it. Here have a listen, enjoy your weekend wherever you are and remember don’t drink and drive.
